The Holtkamp Pipe Organ
During renovations of Hay Street's sanctuary in 1978, a two manual tracker pipe organ was installed by Walter Holtkamp, Sr., of Holtkamp Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Variations in tonal quality are regulated by 24 stops, which control 1,653 pipes grouped into 32 ranks. At the time it was purchased, the organ cost $115,000. It was first played during the regular Sunday morning Worship Service on July 16, 1978.
Tracker organs are built to last, the oldest one still in use having been built in 1390. The keys for the Hay Street organ are not the traditional black and white but rather are carved from plumwood and Brazilian rosewood. This organ uses the original facade of the first Hay Street organ, built in 1916.
Played by Terry Jordan this instrument serves as the backbone for our 11:00am Sunday worship service.
